TRUMP CAN BE STOPPED

After reading the commentary below, please express your own thoughts.  Instructions on how to do so are written at the bottom of this column.  Thank you.

Despite the chance that Donald Trump could sweep the March 1st, 2016 "Super Tuesday" like a Hoover vacuum cleaner, I still think the billionaire businessman can be stopped.

The Republican Party realizes that true conservatives will stay home on Election Day - November 8th, 2016 - and they will, therefore, give up their right to vote if Trump is the GOP nominee.

In past Presidential election cycles, when there are a number of candidates running, Republicans throughout the United States would support whomever has been nominated.  Democrats do the same.  But, as we all know quite well, political rules this year have been tossed in to the trash.  As such, there will be a shake-up in the Republican Party - and among Republicans nationwide - if Donald Trump is on the ballot for the GOP in November.  Therefore, a third party candidate - to go head to head against Trump - (and the Democratic nominee, who I am confident will be Hillary Clinton) - is a strong possibility...if...and I do say if...the real estate and construction industry mogul ends up being the Republican nominee.  An alternative conservative candidate would plunk the whammy on Donald Trump.  And that would put smiles on every Democrat in our country...and certainly on the face of Mrs. Clinton...as that will give the former First Lady -

along with her husband, former President Bill Clinton - the keys to move back in to The White House.

I am not worried about Donald Trump taking on Hillary Clinton...nor am I concerned that Trump can beat the former Secretary of State.  The majority of Americans - Democrats and Independents combined - are smart enough to know that Mrs. Clinton is the only person who can continue moving our nation forward...and not backward to medieval times or the stone age...which Trump or any other Republican will do.

It would be disastrous to the United States if Donald Trump is able to con Independents - and all Republicans - to thinking that he is best for America...because he clearly is not.  But Independents...and of course Democrats too...are intelligent individuals who will rally behind Hillary Clinton on the campaign trail and all the way to the general election.

Donald Trump should be stopped by those who identify themselves as conservative Republicans.  But...if they can't do it...more importantly, Donald Trump will be stopped...and stopped cold...by Hillary Clinton.  And she will be the next President of the United States of America.

And that's The Controversy for today.

WILL INDEPENDENTS PUT DONALD TRUMP IN THE WHITE HOUSE?

After reading the commentary below, please express your own thoughts.  Instructions on how to do so are written at the bottom of this column.  Thank you.
With "Super Tuesday" this upcoming week - on March 1st, 2016 - will Donald Trump win every one of the 11 states up for grabs in the Republican primaries and caucuses?  And if he does...can the biggest mystery in the history of politics - an enigma of sorts - the campaign of Donald Trump - take the billionaire businessman even closer to becoming the Republican nominee for President?

Will the momentum - as incomprehensibly baffling and as inexplicably perplexing as it is with politics - cause Republicans nationwide to fall in line and catapult Trump to the GOP's July convention in Cleveland, Ohio...as the person they think can win The Oval Office in November?

And should Trump's "superstar" stardom go to the top of the Republican Party - which I'm still not so sure that it will do - but if it does...will Independents throughout the United States be bamboozled - or perhaps even charmed - by Donald Trump...that they...the Independents...give Trump enough support on election day 2016...so that he wins the 270 electoral votes to become President?  Will Independents put Donald Trump in The White House?  Will Independents be the fools of America?  Will Independents have poor judgment and a lack of good sense to turn over the highest office in the land to Donald Trump?  No.  I have more faith in Independents.

For the most part...in a Presidential election...Democrats vote for the Democratic nominee - who, this time, I am confident will be Hillary Clinton - Republicans cast their ballots for the GOP candidate...and Independents are..."The Riddlers."  We never know what they're going to do until they do it.  However, it is my true belief that when Independents sit back and evaluate what the Republican Party stands for...and what someone such as Donald Trump would do if he was President - (and we all know the regurgitated dreck that Trump has crudely spewed out of his mouth since June 2015) - then my intuition - as unreliable as such can be - assures me down deep in the essence of my being - that Independents will sway to the "left" and make the "right decision" by helping to elect Hillary Clinton as the 45th President of the United States of America.

     Independents...don't let me down.

And that's The Controversy for today.

     I'm Gary B. Duglin.

CAN DONALD TRUMP BEAT HILLARY CLINTON?

After reading the commentary below, please express your own thoughts.  Instructions on how to do so are written at the bottom of this column.  Thank you.

Regular readers of The Controversy are fully aware that I - in my heart, in my soul and in every fiber of my body - feel that Hillary Clinton will be elected - on November 8th, 2016 - the 45th President of the United States of America.  As a result, Mrs. Clinton will take the oath of office as our next President on January 20th, 2017.  I have been conveying these personal thoughts and opinions, not only for the last ten months since the former Secretary of State announced her candidacy, but for nearly eight years after Mrs. Clinton was defeated in 2008 for the Democratic nomination by then-Senator

Barack Obama.  And when President Obama was re-elected for his second term in 2012, I again stated with great confidence that Hillary Clinton (and former President Bill Clinton) will move back in to The White House on Inauguration Day 2017.

I believe all of the above will be true.  But beliefs are not always definite.  As the old saying goes, there are no certainties in life except for death and taxes.

Not too long ago, I was involved in a political discussion with another liberal Democrat.  He happened to remark - that which I've been declaring all along - that Hillary Clinton beating Bernie Sanders
will be a slam dunk.  And when he echoed my sentiments, I replied with the following words.  "At least I hope so."

Nobody - not even God - knows for sure what the outcome will be in the race for the Democratic nomination.  And obviously, the same applies for the general election for President.  So, "At least I hope so" does not translate in to, I think Hillary may lose, which is what the person I was talking with insisted I meant.

I don't think Hillary Clinton will be defeated by Bernie Sanders...by Donald Trump...or by anybody else.  But is it possible?  As I wrote in an earlier commentary - "I recognize that with politics - as is with everything in life - anything can happen."

In June 2015, I commented to the aforementioned liberal Democrat that "Donald Trump is a superstar."  Those five words sparked a heated debate between two liberal Democrats.  When most Americans - and certainly most journalists and pundits - thought that Trump would be "a flash in the pan" candidate who would be "thrown off the island" (to use a "Reality TV" term) and that his run for President would be over in weeks or surely in a couple of months, I, however, am on the record for insisting that Trump should not be overlooked.  I have always stated that although Donald Trump was a political "Apprentice"...he was indeed a "Celebrity."  As such, "candidate" Trump needed to be respected.  Not respected for his ideas - which nearly every one I vehemently disagree with - but Donald Trump should be respected for what he has accomplished in life.  For that reason, Trump's "super star" has been shining brightly for many, many years...and not just as the host and executive producer of a number one show on television. That being said, The Apprentice and The Celebrity Apprentice were the rocket ship that propelled Donald Trump at the start of his campaign.

But to my surprise, Trump was, at least, somewhat popular - across the United States - long before he ever became a reality TV star.  As a real estate mogul and a giant in the construction industry, Donald Trump was also well-known nationwide decades ago...not just in New York and New Jersey...where - at the time - most of his properties were built.

I was recently watching a 1985 episode - on the Game Show Network - of the CBS daytime series, The $25,000 Pyramid...hosted by the late great and legendary Dick Clark.  One of the categories in the two-team competition (not the big pyramid bonus round) was described as "Celebrity people whose last names begin with T."  Among the seven names that popped up on the screen were Elizabeth Taylor, John Travolta and - believe it or not - Donald Trump.  The celebrity's clue was, "He's a billionaire real estate guy in New

York City."  The contestant's immediate response was..."Donald Trump."  And again, that was in 1985.  So Trump's prominence throughout our country didn't begin after The Apprentice was a huge hit on NBC.  As much as I don't like Donald Trump for President of the United States, I have to be fair about his longtime fame.

Did I think that Donald Trump would be the Republican front-runner - at this point - in Campaign 2016...and that he would have won primaries in New Hampshire and South Carolina...and a caucus in Nevada?  No.  I did not.  But for some strange reason, there are Republicans - albeit only about one-third of GOP-identified Americans - who think that no matter how vicious Donald Trump's remarks are...he is still their choice for President.

Former CBS News Chief Washington Correspondent and former anchor of Face The Nation, Bob Schieffer, told the current Face The Nation moderator and CBS News Political Director, John Dickerson on Sunday, February 21st, 2016 that "Donald Trump speaks his mind.  He is really connecting with voters.  They're not even worried about what he says.  They just enjoy hearing him say it."  That's it.  Bob has hit the nail on the head.  "They just enjoy hearing him say it."  And that's the crux of the success - at least so far - of Trump's entire campaign.  Those who support him don't care at all about what venom he spews off his tongue.  They don't know, if elected, as President and Commander-In-Chief, if Donald Trump will actually be able to do the vile things he is crudely expressing...but in his supporters' minds...it makes no difference.  They just feel that if Trump truly thinks the way that he talks...that he might be successful.  And that's his strength.  And it has made Donald Trump an even bigger "superstar" than ever before...something I was absolutely correct about last June when I labeled him with that word.

All of the above being said, I never thought Donald Trump had any chance of winning the Republican nomination...and I still am not so sure that such a feat will become a "reality" in this "Reality TV-type" of Presidential campaign.  I'd like to believe...and I want to hope...that Republican Americans are smart enough to realize that Donald Trump is not good for the United States of America as our President.  His radical concepts are wrong for our nation.  And it not only puzzles me, but disturbs me that there are so many Americans who back a man who wants to deport 11-million people...who calls Mexicans "rapists"...who feels John McCain is not a war hero...who wants to keep all Muslims from entering our country...and who will fight with the Pope - to mention only a handful of reasons why Donald Trump should never be President of the United States.  So why have Trump supporters not questioned all the hatefully horrendous statements that he has made?  It's shocking to think there are that many of my fellow Americans who - whether they believe him or not - are listening to Donald Trump.  But, as I wrote above, I don't believe that Trump's "tell it like I see it" plan can take him all the way to the Republican nomination...and I definitely don't think it can take him to The White House.

John Kasich - on the other hand - is one who political junkies need to watch.  The Ohio Governor may currently be 4th in a 5-man race, but I would not count him out as the Republican nominee.  At present, that may seem unlikely, but with Campaign 2016, the unlikely has often become likely...and without notice.  The rules and the unexpected are done away with forever as a result of Campaign 2016.

I was recently asked the same question by three people...a liberal Democrat who - like me - supports Hillary Clinton...a liberal Democrat who backs Bernie Sanders...and a conservative Republican who is, at present, undecided, but who would prefer not to vote for Donald Trump, although he would, if Trump was nominated.  Each person asked me..."If he is the Republican nominee...can Donald Trump beat Hillary Clinton?"  My answer was..."I don't think he can.  I would bet that he won't.  I hope not."  Shame on Americans, if he does.  And if he does...God help the U.S.A.

And that's The Controversy for today.

HARPER LEE: BELOVED AND REVERED

After reading the commentary below, please express your own thoughts.  Instructions on how to do so are written at the bottom of this column.  Thank you.

Thank you, Harper Lee.  And thank you, Sydney Sue Behrman Helfand.

That second name will mean nothing to most of my readers, but let me tell you why Miss Behrman - later Mrs. Helfand - is someone special from my childhood.  One reason is because she introduced me to the genius that was...and always will be...Harper Lee.

It was the fall of 1969...and I was all of 14 years old...when Miss Behrman - my 9th grade English teacher - assigned all the students of her Freshmen year classes to read Harper Lee's Pulitzer Prize-winning masterpiece, To Kill A Mockingbird.  As any kid - by the time they reach high school - I had read dozens and dozens of books, but none as impressive and as captivating as this classic, American treasure.  I distinctly recall reading chapter after chapter - the entire book - throughout one Saturday afternoon and night.  As the saying goes, I couldn't put it down.  And, I had never done that with any other book.  But I fell in love with To Kill A Mockingbird.

Miss Behrman had given each student his or her own paperback.  And now, nearly 47 years later, I still have mine with my handwritten name scribbled on the inside cover.  As odd as it may be to some of you - others perhaps not - my copy of To Kill A Mockingbird is one of my cherished possessions.  In 1969, it cost only 95 cents...but today...to me...it's priceless.  And I'm grateful to my extraordinary teacher - Sydney Sue Behrman Helfand - for acquainting me with To Kill A Mockingbird and Harper Lee.

To Kill A Mockingbird is arguably the defining novel of the 20th Century.  Harper Lee is the quintessential storyteller.  And both have enriched my life.  Therefore, it is important to me that I pay tribute and my final respects to someone who has left such an indelible mark on my memory and my spirit.  As you may know, Harper Lee passed away on Friday, February 19th, 2016 at the age of 89.

Harper Lee's flawless jewel of literary brilliance - which was published in 1960 - is a gift to the world...and it is wrapped with the passion...and compassion...of its consummate characters.  To Kill A Mockingbird touched my soul the very first time I read it...and it will forever live in my mind...and in my heart.

And that's The Controversy for today.

                                              I'm Gary B. Duglin.

THOSE FOUR WANT TO BE PRESIDENT?

After reading the commentary below, please express your own thoughts.  Instructions on how to do so are written at the bottom of this column.  Thank you.

The Republican Party should be nicknamed the WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment)...or the WBA (World Boxing Association)...and not the GOP (Grand Old Party)...because there is nothing "Grand" about their candidates.  And I don't just mean because of their politics.

As a liberal, progressive Democrat, I can disagree with the ideas and policies of conservative Republicans, but still respect them as people - at least some of them.  But after their disgraceful appearances in the Saturday, February 13th, 2016 debate - broadcast live on CBS - four of the six remaining Republican candidates have no business seeking the nomination for President. Furthermore, if these men weren't competing for the highest office in our land, I would have thought that the Saturday night altercations would have ended up in a barroom-type brawl...or worse...a violent, rough-and-tumble dogfight.  And how ironic it was that this so-called "debate" was held at the Peace Center in Greenville, South Carolina.  After all, there was no "peace" among these candidates.  It was an all-out war with hateful words of vindictive venom being spewed at each other by Jeb Bush, Marco Rubio, Donald Trump and Ted Cruz.

John Kasich and Ben Carson each made a valiant effort to communicate to their challengers to cut out their nonsense...as the rowdy rejects were making Democrats across the country smile and Independents wondering why they would ever consider voting for any Republican.  At one point, Kasich scolded the feuding foresome and chided them for hurling scathing and degrading insults at each other.  The Ohio Governor came down hard on his opponents.  "These attacks...some of them are personal.  I think we're fixin' to lose the election to Hillary Clinton if we don't stop this."  Kasich also suggested getting rid of all negative ads and focusing only on the issues.  But no reprimand by Kasich or Carson seemed to make a dent in the uncivil and unpresidential-like behavior of the sharp-tongued Trump, Cruz, Rubio and Bush.

As a Democrat who supports Hillary Clinton for President, I was jubilant as the Republicans unleashed their obnoxious and despicable fury upon one another.  As an American, however, I was embarrassed that these four grown men - each of whom feels he should be moving in to The White House next January 20th - were instead performing like juvenile jerks and nasty little brats.  None of the four - Donald Trump, Ted Cruz, Marco Rubio and Jeb Bush - deserve to be running for President of the United States of America.  What each one does deserve...is a spanking.

And that's The Controversy for today.

     I'm Gary B. Duglin.

AMERICA IS GREAT!

After reading the commentary below, please express your own thoughts.  Instructions on how to do so are written at the bottom of this column.  Thank you.

On January 1st, 1863, when President Abraham Lincoln issued the historic Emancipation Proclamation, it declared "that all persons held as slaves" within ten rebellious states "are, and henceforward shall be free."  Thus, President Lincoln's signature gave freedom from slavery to most Americans with black skin color.  Emancipation to Negroes who lived in other areas of the country would come later after separate state actions or by the December 1865 ratification of the Thirteenth Amendment.  That Amendment made slavery illegal everywhere that was subject to United States jurisdiction.  However, after both these laws were enacted, it was still unimaginable that a man of the Negro race would ever be elected to the highest office in the land.

One-hundred years after President Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation, The Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. - on August 28th, 1963 - gave his memorable and captivating "I Have A Dream" speech at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, DC.  With bigotry and racism running rampant…and civil rights for all people...terribly undesirable by a great many Americans...it was still thought to be impossible that a man – who in those days were horribly referred to as “colored” – would ever be given the opportunity to run for President of the United States…let alone to be someone who could ever occupy The Oval Office of The White House.

All of the above being said, as every American knows, in 2008, Barack Obama – an African-American – was indeed elected as our 44th President…and thankfully, he was re-elected for a second term in 2012.  But, with equal rights for every single person in our country still not really equal – but better than at any time in our nation’s history – it is quite possible that our next President could again be a person who, in the past, could never have had the chance of being elected, or even nominated, for the Presidency.  And why?  For no other reasons than because of hatred…because of ignorance…or because of plain stupidity that nobody but a white man could be President.

If you’re a regular reader of The Controversy, you are well aware that I fully support Hillary Clinton in her bid for President.  And although I am completely confident that the former Secretary of State is going to be successful, I recognize that with politics - as is with everything in life - anything can happen.  As such, I acknowledge and understand that - since I do not have a crystal ball - I, therefore, cannot foresee the future...nor can anybody else.  But should Hillary Clinton become the 45th President of the United States, she will be - as everybody knows - our first female President and Commander-In-Chief...something that years ago, not only wasn't possible, but wasn't allowed, as women didn't even have the right to vote until the Nineteenth Amendment became part of the U.S. Constitution on August 26th, 1920.

But let’s say Secretary Clinton doesn’t win the Democratic nomination – which I believe is highly unlikely – and that Senator Bernie Sanders defeats her and he is then elected President on November 8th, 2016.  America would have its first Jewish President.  And with anti-Semitism still a problem in the U.S.A, the vision…or even the concept… of a Jew as President...has always been a near impossibility.  A bit of a fact, however… Senator Sanders has already made history as the first Jew to ever win delegates towards the nomination for President.

Furthermore, it is potentially possible that a Hispanic could win the Republican nomination and - as improbable as it may be, in my view - then win in the general election and become President.  That is if either Senator Ted Cruz or Senator Marco Rubio is chosen by the GOP.

Much more implausible this year is for another African-American to gain the nomination of his political party – this time by the Republicans.  But, Dr. Ben Carson is also competing for that position.

A black President elected in 2008 and 2012 is a fact.  But now, in 2016, will Americans cast their ballots and vote in the first woman for President?  Or, will we have our first Jewish President?  And, if nominated, will the first Hispanic be moving in to the Washington mansion? Or, will Americans elect another African-American to lead our nation?

Republican Donald Trump proclaims he is running for President because he wants to “make America great again.”  The fact that we have a woman who could be elected President this year…or that there’s the possibility that a Jew could become President….or a Hispanic…or another African-American…well, sorry Donald… but for those reasons alone – not to mention numerous other reasons – I think America IS great!

And that’s The Controversy for today.

HILLARY CLINTON "WILL GET THINGS DONE"

After reading the commentary below, please express your own thoughts.  Instructions on how to do so are written at the bottom of this column.  Thank you.

The Controversy takes on a different style for my commentary this week.  Instead of writing a long-form editorial, I've decided to share with you some of my Tweets from the Thursday night, February 4th, 2016 Democratic Presidential Candidates Debate on MSNBC between former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont.  These are Tweets that were "liked" by numerous Americans who were also watching the debate...and Tweets that were re-Tweeted by a great many people throughout the night.  I welcome those of you reading The Controversy right now to express your own views - at the bottom of this column - about Secretary Clinton and about Senator Sanders...whether you are in favor of one...or the other...or neither.  For purposes of this blog, I am not including any of the Twitter handles that I tagged at the end of my Tweets.  I am re-printing my Tweets exactly as they were written for Twitter.  My first Tweet below was extremely popular and was re-Tweeted over and over again.

     I am a #Liberal, #progressive #Democrat.  So is @HillaryClinton & as #President she will get things done.

@HillaryClinton is the ONLY one who can get things done.

     #America needs #HillaryClinton in the #WhiteHouse.  She will #getthingsdone.

     @HillaryClinton will #getthingsdone in #Washington.  #Hillary is the best for #America.

@HillaryClinton wants to be #President and she will #getthingsdone.  She will be a perfect #commanderinchief.

@HillaryClinton will continue to make progress.

On #domesticissues and #ForeignPolicy there will be no one better in the #WhiteHouse than #HillaryClinton.

     #HillaryClinton has excellent #judgement.

     @HillaryClinton will be an #ActionPresident.

     #Hillary is killing it at the #DemDebate.  She is on #topofhergame.  It'll be a #LANDslideWIN for #HillaryClinton.

#HillaryClinton won Iowa.  Now let's move on.

#HillaryClinton is by far the #strongestcandidate and she will make a #greatpresident.

Stop already about the e-mails.  #HillaryClinton did #nothingwrong.

@HillaryClinton has the #Experience to be a #greatpresident.  Tonight's #DemDebate proves that #Hillary is best for the job.

@HillaryClinton will not only do good for #America, she will do #greatforAmerica.

     Superb #DemDebate by moderators @chucktodd & @maddow.  They allowed @HillaryClinton & @SenSanders 2 debate w/o it being a show 4 the anchors.

     Tonite's #DemDebate was #bestdebate in modern political history.  @HillaryClinton & @SenSanders discussed issues.  Didn't fight like the #GOP.

A couple of tiffs between @HillaryClinton & @SenSanders at the Feb. 4 #DemDebate, but this lady and this gentleman gave us a classy debate.

And that's The Controversy for today.

     I'm Gary B. Duglin.
