AN UNACCEPTABLE TRAGEDY

After reading the commentary below, please express your own thoughts.  Instructions on how to do so are written at the bottom of this column.  Thank you.

There is enough sadness in the world...and there are enough tragedies that unfortunately cannot be helped.  Natural disasters such as earthquakes... hurricanes...and tornadoes...cannot be prevented or stopped...once Mother Nature makes her decision to strike.  And as people...we wonder why precious human lives are attacked with the devastation and destruction that can kill thousands in the blink of an eye.

But when death can be avoided...when there is no sane reason for a life to be lost...it beckons us to ask the question...how on Earth could that happen?

While our nation...and our planet...continue to suffer from hatred...acts of war and terrorism will require the United States to be on top with the best military force anywhere on the globe.  So therefore...we depend on those individuals - men and women alike - who enlist in to the various branches of our armed services.  These brave and courageous souls...acknowledge when they sign-up...that there is the chance...that they will find themselves on the field of battle.  It, of course, is not their desire to be crawling on their bellies in a bug-infested jungle...or on the scorching sands of a hot desert...and no one considers it fun to kill another human being.  But when soldiers, marines, airmen and sailors take their oaths of office...they recognize that there is always the possibility of going to war.  And that before a foreign counterpart riddles an American with bullets...he or she who represents our "stars and stripes"...may need to shoot an enemy combatant dead...otherwise that adversary won't care for one moment...about ending the life of the American.

First-class training...combined with special skills, natural instincts and good luck...will help troops overseas who are serving our country...and who are fighting to save the world from the horrors of those who are evil.  And please God...we pray that all who have freely volunteered to wear an American military uniform...will each return home...safe and sound to their loved ones...after performing their duties.

But as we know...not all of our "boys and girls" come back to the soils of our states...outside of a pine box.  Others arrive on U.S. land...with or without a permanent injury.

When any of our "band of brothers...or sisters"...has been maimed - physically or mentally - he or she deserves to be treated with the highest caliber of quality medical attention.  There are no excuses for anything less.

And even when an American does return to our shores...without a scratch...and with their mind completely focused on their future...that person will forever more be worthy of the respect...and the compassion...of someone who risked his or her life...so that we, as a nation...would be safe.  Accordingly...whenever that armed forces veteran has any sort of health problem...it is the obligation of our federal government...to be absolutely certain...that he or she receives the best medical care...commensurate with someone...whose efforts helped keep our liberties and freedoms...protected and preserved.

Why am I writing today about United States veterans?  Because on Sunday, August 21st, 2016...a 76-year old former Navy gunner was found dead in the parking lot of Long Island's Northport Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Suffolk County, New York.  Peter Kaisen shot himself to death.  And he did so...presumably...when he was allegedly denied treatment in the emergency room of the hospital.  This is an unacceptable tragedy.

Friends and family have reportedly described Kaisen...who lived in Islip, New York...as a "quiet person" and a "loving father of three and grandfather of seven"... who "loved his family...and loved animals."

In addition to being outfitted in the past with a white sailor hat...Kaisen also helped others later while dressing in blue and with a badge.  Newsday reports that the retired police officer's wife - Joan Kaisen - claims her husband had been suffering severe back pain...which apparently was caused by a 1960 automobile accident while in the line of duty as a cop.  However...The New York Times says that two employees of the VA hospital...told the newspaper anonymously...that Kaisen was "frustrated" when he was denied the opportunity to see a doctor for mental health issues.

Meanwhile...as a result of this heart-wrenching suicide...two U.S. Congressmen are calling for a federal probe.  Representative Steve Israel, a Democrat, and Representative Peter King, a Republican, sent a joint letter - on Thursday, August 25th - to the Secretary of Veterans Affairs and the Director of the F.B.I.... "demand(ing)" an "expeditious and transparent investigation" in to Kaisen's death.  After all...as one source told The New York Times..."Someone dropped the ball.  They should not have turned him away."

The Department of Veterans Affairs in Washington, DC...released data in July 2016...which reveals that an average of 20 military veterans kill themselves everyday.  And a huge majority of those suicides - 65 percent - are of vets who are 50 years of age or older.

I believe all people who are ill should be provided proper healthcare.  But it amazes me...that some murderers, rapists and other hardened criminals...receive better medical attention in prison...than our armed forces veterans.  That is not right.  That should not happen.  We owe our veterans.  They have sacrificed so much for us.  We need to treat our vets at least as good...if not better...than convicted felons who are behind bars.

Joan Kaisen tells Newsday that doctors had recently informed her husband that there was nothing more they could do to alleviate his excruciating back pain.  Could this be why Kaisen decided to take his own life?  His family can only speculate.  But for a man who gave so much to help others...as a Navy veteran...and as a police officer...it's a terrible shame...that somebody couldn't help him.

THE CLINTON FOUNDATION SAVES LIVES

After reading the commentary below, please express your own thoughts.  Instructions on how to do so are written at the bottom of this column.  Thank you.

Donald Trump and the Republicans are doing it again.  And what they are doing...is out of desperation.  For Trump to call for a special prosecutor...to probe the Clinton Foundation...is one more failing attempt by the GOP nominee to discredit Hillary Clinton.

Trump's latest witch-hunt stems from a not altogether correct report - on Monday, August 22nd, 2016 - by the Associated Press...which claims that more than half the people who met one-on-one with the former Secretary of State...while she was in office...then shelled out cash contributions to the Clinton Foundation.  Subsequently - at a campaign rally in Akron, Ohio the same day - Donald Trump demanded a federal investigation...in to whether foreign donations to the Clinton Foundation...could have possibly swayed Mrs. Clinton's decisions while a Cabinet Member in President Obama's Administration.  According to the AP... representatives from 16 foreign governments...had contributed 170-million dollars to the Clinton Foundation.  And that other individuals - who met with Hillary Clinton - signed checks that collectively totaled another 156-million dollars...with 40 people making donations of more than 100-thousand dollars each...and 20 giving the Clinton Foundation contributions that were in excess of one-million dollars each.  Trump insists that an "expedited investigation by a special prosecutor" must be ordered.

The AP writes that 85 of 154 non-U.S. government hotshots - which, the AP says, does not include the 16 foreign dignitaries noted above - either donated bundles of bucks to the charity...or pledged commitments to the organization's international programs...after they experienced first-hand access to Secretary Clinton.

So what?  Big deal.  No money was given to Hillary Clinton herself...or to former President Bill Clinton...or to their daughter, Chelsea Clinton - who is vice chairperson of the Clinton Foundation.  And there were no State Department actions that were ever influenced by the Clinton Foundation...as a result of any contributions made to the charity.

In a live, on-air telephone interview with Anderson Cooper on his CNN program, Anderson Cooper 360...Secretary Clinton - on Wednesday, August 24th - said, "My work as Secretary of State was not influenced by any outside forces.  There's no evidence of any kind of impropriety at all."

And Friday, August 26th...Mrs. Clinton - in a live, on-air telephone conversation with Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski on their Morning Joe show on MSNBC - emphasized that "Neither my husband, my daughter, nor I have ever taken a penny of salary from the Foundation."

Therefore...if I may borrow one of Vice President Joe Biden's favorite words...why then all the "malarky" about Mrs. Clinton's "face to face" with certain high profile bigwigs?  No policies were changed.  As such...there is no proof whatsoever of any quid pro quo.  Besides...the State Department - on Tuesday, August 23rd - made it quite clear that "individuals - including those who have donated to political campaigns, non-profits, or foundations...including the Clinton Foundation... may contact or have meetings with...officials in the Administration."  So, as usual, Donald Trump's blathering is nothing more than his evil nonsense.

Secretary Clinton met with people that wanted to aid others who were in need of financial assistance.  Nothing inappropriate was done...on anybody's part.  Thus... this is just another scheme cooked-up...to wrongly suggest a scandal that simply does not exist.

But Trump alleges that "The Clintons made the State Department in to the same kind of pay-to-play operation as the Arkansas government was" when Mr. Clinton was Governor of "The Natural State."  The billionaire businessman's remark is another one of his slanderous slams against the 42nd President and the former First Lady.  However...the AP does not suggest in its report...any "pay-to-play" between the State Department and the Clinton Foundation.  That was something Donald Trump dreamed up in his wickedly warped mind.

Furthermore...on Friday, August 26th...Hillary For America Press Secretary Brian Fallon, criticized the Associated Press for giving a "distorted portrayal of how she (Secretary Clinton) crossed paths with individuals connected to charitable donations to the Clinton Foundation."  Fallon says the AP did not include - in its published story - more than 1,700 meetings that Mrs. Clinton held with world leaders.  Therefore...instead of the mathematical equation being 85 of 154...it becomes 85 of 1,700...or 5 percent of people Secretary Clinton met with...who might have actually donated money to the Clinton Foundation...NOT..."more than half"...as the Associated Press reported.

It is undeniably true that the Clinton Foundation helps more than eleven-and-a-half-million people...living in over 70 countries around the globe...who are suffering with HIV/AIDS...to receive lifesaving medication at a price tag that is ninety percent lower than the regular cost.  That excellent work by the Clinton Foundation includes providing affordable drugs to more than 800-thousand children.  Therefore...more than half the adults and three-quarters of the kids on treatment today for HIV/AIDS are being helped by the Clinton Foundation.

The Clinton Foundation's charity efforts have been invaluable for 15 years...since being founded as the William J. Clinton Foundation...by the former President... following his two terms behind The Oval Office desk.  However...to be more precise... the foundation's origins actually began in 1997 - while President Clinton was still Commander-In-Chief...but it was - at that time - focused on fundraising for the future Clinton Presidential Center in Little Rock, Arkansas.

Today, however...the Clinton Foundation also supports educational programs that affect 18-million students in the United States...and that improve physical education...child nutrition...health education...and staff wellness activities in 31-thousand schools nationwide.  The foundation also concentrates on stopping prescription drug addiction.

Known as "America's most independent, assertive charity watchdog"...Charity Watch says...87.2 percent of the Clinton Foundation's funding is used directly for the purposes of helping people who benefit from the organization's endeavors.  That amount is recognized and acknowledged, worldwide, as a very high percentage by any non-profit charity group.

Meanwhile...President Clinton - on Monday, August 22nd - announced that if Mrs. Clinton does win The White House on November 8th...which this columnist is confident she will...the Clinton Foundation will no longer accept foreign contributions...but donations only from American citizens...legal residents...and U.S.-based, independent foundations.  Plus...Mr. Clinton will step down from his position on the foundation's board...and he will not be involved in any fundraising.  Chelsea Clinton, however...will remain in her capacity...with the charity that bears her family's name.  And quite frankly...there's nothing wrong with her doing that.

But what about Donald Trump and his business dealings?  Clinton Campaign chairman John Podesta says, "Trump needs to come clean with voters about his complex network of for-profit businesses that are hundreds of millions of dollars in debt to big banks...including the state-owned Bank of China... and other business groups with ties to The Kremlin."

Furthermore...the Republican nominee has still not released his tax returns... which is a standard practice for anyone running for President.

What is Donald Trump hiding?  Why won't he reveal the mysteries of his income?

The Clinton Foundation is an important and worthwhile asset to not only the United States, but to the entire world.  And Bill, Hillary and Chelsea Clinton should be applauded for all their efforts and for the first-rate, phenomenal performance by the charity as a whole.  The Clinton Foundation is a top-drawer organization of the highest caliber...and it should not be chastised...or castigated...by Donald Trump...or by anybody else.

The Clinton Foundation saves lives.  When has Donald Trump or the Trump Organization...done that?

And that's The Controversy for today.

A LOVE FOR DOGS

After reading the commentary below, please express your own thoughts.  Instructions on how to do so are written at the bottom of this column.  Thank you.

It's National Dog Day...and the following is written in memory of Snoopy the Boxer...Buddy the Collie...Oliver the Shih Tzu...Bentley the Bernese Mountain Dog...Madison the Golden Retriever...and Gracie the Golden Retriever.  This composition is also dedicated to the life and continued living - and hopefully for many more years - of Kirby the Shih Tzu.

In a world where hundreds of millions of people are sharing their personal views on everything from Facebook to Twitter...and in other social media forums...I ask that today - whether you've commented at The Controversy in the past or not - that you pour out a little piece of your heart...to honor and pay tribute...to the dog...or dogs...in your lives.

If you're a regular reader of The Controversy, part of today's essay may seem familiar to you.  Going back in to the history of this publication...I had written some of the content for an earlier commentary.  But since today...Friday, August 26th, 2016...is National Dog Day...and because also today...I am celebrating the writing of my 200th column for this blog...I thought I would put politics and the Presidential election aside...and instead...share with you an assortment of personal thoughts about..."Man's...(and Woman's)...Best Friend."

According to the ASPCA...a dog can be found living in about 37 to 47 percent of all households in the United States.  So there's no doubt...that a great amount of you...either now...or at a previous point in your lives...have shared your homes - as I have - with dogs.  And, as all dog lovers will admit - with adoration...appreciation... and esteem - dogs are part of our families.

We care for our dogs.  They eat with us...they play with us...and they sleep with us - sometimes in our beds.  We love our dogs...and they make us happy.  And in turn...they love us...and we make them happy.  People and dogs love each other.

Dogs never lose their patience with us.  And they forgive us when we just don't feel up to tossing the ball.

Dogs are loyal and devoted.  When we're ill...our "canine cousins" stick right by us.  Somehow they sense when we are sick...or when we're troubled...or when we're upset.  And when our dogs are not well...we will do absolutely anything...to make them better.  There is a special bond - unlike any other - between a person and a dog.

Dogs truly are our best friends.  We can talk to our dogs.  And even though they can't speak back in a human form of vocal communication...they project their emotions...and are understanding...in other ways.  A lick on our face...or on our nose...can easily sway us...from sadness to smiles.  And when we pat a dog on his or her head...it can bring joy to both of us.

It doesn't matter to dogs what color our skin is...or what religion we practice.  Dogs don't judge us for being rich or poor...young or old...male or female...Democrat or Republican...straight or gay.  Dogs are not prejudiced in any manner.

Whether your dog is purebred or mongrel...a rescued pooch from your local animal shelter or one with a documented pedigree...when necessary to safeguard his or her human family...I can assure you that your dog will be courageous and brave.

Dogs of all sizes, shapes and colors serve in the military...and for police and fire departments.  And dogs have been known to alert their people...when danger is looming.   There's a published account about a remarkable seeing-eye dog...who - on September 11th, 2001 - sought out his blind master in one of the World Trade Center Towers...and led the man down an emergency stairwell...just minutes before the New York City skyscraper collapsed.

Through intelligence, training or instinct...dogs have been known to alarm a second person...by barking...when a mortal family member has fallen or been hurt... suffered a heart attack or stroke...or are in some other type of distress.  Because we worry about our dogs...and protect our dogs...they worry about us...and protect us.  Dogs are forever faithful...and we rely on them for so much.  Some dogs will even lay down their lives...so one person...or many people...can live.

Dogs cherish us...and treasure us.  Dogs provide unconditional affection and companionship.  Through thick and thin...good times and bad times...dogs stay by our sides.  World-famous American humorist, newspaper columnist, author and actor Will Rogers summed up dogs perfectly.  "If there are no dogs in Heaven...then when I die...I want to go...where they went."

     I can't imagine a world without dogs...as there is no other creature on Earth...as extraordinary...as a dog.

And that's The Controversy for today.

     I'm Gary B. Duglin.

     "We'll talk again."
