2017: A YEAR WITH DELUSIONAL AND DANGEROUS DONALD. A YEAR OF DISGUST.

As this year of disgust - 2017 - comes to a close...more than two-thirds of Americans do not approve of the President of the United States.  The year 2017 is a year when 16-term Representative John Lewis - who is commonly referred to as "the conscience of the U.S. Congress" - was strong with his thoughts that an illegitimate president moved into The White House.  In a January interview with NBC News Political Director and Meet The Press moderator Chuck Todd, Congressman Lewis was adamant with his words..."I don't see (Donald Trump) as a legitimate president."  And for those of you who dispute Lewis' remark, the non-partisan newspaper, Roll Call, praises the Georgia Democrat as "a genuine American hero and moral leader who commands widespread respect in the chamber."

This year, 2017, finds Donald Trump as the only elected U.S. President in history who was not named America's "most admired man" in his first year behind The Oval Office desk.  Ironically, however...a Gallup Poll - released on Wednesday, December 27th - has, for the sixteenth consecutive year, identified Trump's 2016 Democratic opponent, Hillary Clinton, as the "most admired woman" in our country.  The former Secretary of State has been crowned with that title a total of twenty-two times. That's more than any other person.

Republican Trump is our nation's 45th President by virtue of an arcane and obscure system of political voting.  Even though Hillary Clinton won the popular vote, Trump claimed victory after the November 8th, 2016 election when he successfully achieved the magic number of 270 electoral votes.  All that being said...a recent poll by the Pew Research Center says 32 percent - that's less than one-third of Americans - approve of Donald Trump as our country's leader.  Trump continues - as he has throughout 2017 - to frequently criticize and chastise...both Mrs. Clinton and former President Barack Obama for a variety of unjustifiable reasons.  Yet, according to the Gallup Poll, Trump ranked second place as the "most admired man" in the U.S.A.  The top spot - that's first place - goes to our 44th President.  Mr. Obama has held the number one position as America's "most admired man" for ten years in a row.

As we suffer through Trump's tirade of tweets and his pathological lies...criminal allegations against him continue to grow.  Trump is accused by tens of millions of Americans for being involved in a conspiracy to collude with Russia in order to interfere and influence our 2016 presidential election...and for allegedly obstructing justice when he fired FBI Director James Comey.  Comey testified before Congress that he believes he lost his job because Trump wanted to put a stop to the Russia investigation.  Trump has all along insisted that the Russia probe is a "witch-hunt"... "a hoax"...and "fake news" that was created by Democrats - and what conservatives call "the liberal media" - because of Hillary Clinton's loss in the 2016 election.  No American President can function - let alone succeed - when he's made the working free press his enemy.  Collusion will be proved...as will conspiracy and obstruction of justice.  And guess what, Donald?  It all may be the result of hard work by one or more reporters.  Do you remember Watergate?  Americans should forever be grateful for Bob Woodward, Carl Bernstein and the late Ben Bradlee of The Washington Post.

As the year 2017 has progressed...more and more people - mostly Independents and some Republicans - who voted for Trump...have realized this year that they were snookered in to believing Trump's lies.  And I am certain that those numbers will increase throughout 2018...and when they do...we will perhaps see three-quarters (or more) of our voting population enraged and turning against Donald Trump. Furthermore, as I wrote in a column back in February 2017, former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn will spill the beans and throw Trump under the bus in order to save his own skin.  And there may be others who have been...or who are currently... part of Trump's own circle...who will do the same.

On December 28th, 2017, Trump told The New York Times that the Russia inquiry makes the United States "look very bad."  No Donald...you make America look very bad.  Meanwhile, the vast majority of Americans remain frustrated, concerned and even angry that we are subjected to a President who cares more about reducing taxes for the wealthy than the so-called middle-class and the poor...and that he'd be willing to sign a law that could bring death to millions of people if they lost their health insurance.  Thankfully, the Affordable Care Act ("Obamacare") was not repealed this year.

Early in the presidential campaign, I frequently wrote columns where I labeled Donald Trump "a mentally ill madman"...who is "reckless, delusional and dangerous"... and "totally unfit to serve as President of the United States."  I expressed those descriptions long before it became commonplace.  It wasn't until November 29th, 2017 when the The New York Daily News published the following.  "After his latest spasm of deranged tweets, only those completely under his spell can deny what growing numbers of Americans have long suspected:  The President of the United States is profoundly unstable.  He is mad.  He is, by any honest layman's definition, mentally unwell and viciously lashing out."

In an e-mail I received on September 28th, 2017 from former Vice President Joe Biden, Mr. Biden wrote, in part..."We have an American President who has publicly proclaimed a moral equivalency between Neo-Nazis and those who would oppose their venom and hate."  Vice President Biden says Donald Trump "has emboldened white supremacists with messages of comfort and support."  I continue to shake my head with wonder how nearly 63-million Americans voted for this man.

Michael Jordan - not the famous basketball star, but someone with the same name - tweeted about Donald Trump on November 28th, 2017.  "He is vile, he is vermin, and anyone exposed to him should immediately be provided with some form of disinfectant."

The proverb, "See no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil" is traditionally connected to a 17th Century carving over the door of a Japanese shrine, which depicts three iconic wise monkeys.  Today, America could attach the aforementioned proverb to a number of Republican Members of Congress who - for whatever their reasons - have so far...refused to recognize that our country is being led by a paranoid narcissistic maniac who everyday puts the United States in grave danger with his off-the-cuff offensive remarks.  Trump's toxic tongue has badmouthed and belittled honorable individuals...and callously offended everyone who won't - in plain English - "kiss his butt."  And even then...nobody is really safe from Trump's evil ways.

The impeachment of Donald Trump is on the minds and the lips of numerous Americans...including many in Congress.  A Republican-controlled House of Representatives impeached President Bill Clinton on December 19th, 1998 because Congressmen believed Mr. Clinton was guilty of perjury and obstruction of justice. Those charges were the result of a sexual harassment lawsuit that was filed against our 42nd President by Paula Jones.  Wisely, Senators were smarter than House Members and, therefore, on February 12th, 1999, the U.S. Senate refused to convict Mr. Clinton.  He was rightfully acquitted.  But Special Counsel Robert Mueller's Russia investigation will eventually take down Donald Trump...and our nation will be better off when Trump is removed from office.  I won't predict a specific date, but I am fully confident that Mueller - along with investigations by Congress and an assortment of dedicated journalists - will dig the political grave and metaphorically bury Trump... especially after the 2018 mid-term elections when, I believe, Democrats will regain control of both the Senate and the House of Representatives.  However...as regular readers of The Controversy are aware...I have stated in other columns that Trump will never be impeached.  He will not ever put himself through House impeachment hearings and a Senate trial.  However, as was the case with President Richard Nixon...once impeachment proceedings begin, Trump will resign the presidency.  The evidence will be clear and Trump's choice will be cut-and-dried.  Resign...or be impeached, convicted and removed from office.  Trump will choose resignation.

Donald Trump is a spoiled brat who - for most of his life - has gotten whatever he has wanted and has done whatever he has desired.  So therefore, in a Thursday, December 28th, 2017 interview with The New York Times, Trump insisted..."I have the absolute right to do what I want to do with the Justice Department."  But Congressman Adam Schiff doesn't agree.  The California Democrat - who is the Ranking Member of the House Intelligence Committee and a former Member of the House Judiciary Committee - responded to Trump's bogus claim in a Friday, December 29th tweet.  "No you don't.  You can do what you want with your golf courses.  But the country and its Justice Department belong to the American people."  Trump simply doesn't want to accept the fact that the United States does not operate like The Trump Organization.  "The Donald" may have been the boss of everything linked to the "Trump" brand...but when it comes to the brand of "America"...the citizens of our nation are the bosses.  And in nearly a year since his inauguration, Trump still doesn't seem to get that through his head.  And I suppose he never will.

And that's The Controversy for today.

TRUMP CAN INDEED BE PROSECUTED FOR OBSTRUCTION OF JUSTICE

After reading this editorial, please express your own thoughts.  At the bottom, please click on the word "Comments" below the copyright and type your remarks in the box.  When finished,  please click on the word "Publish."  Please also share a link to this column with others in your e-mail directory and on social media.

In the 20th Century, two Presidents of the United States were subjected to impeachment proceedings.  President Bill Clinton was impeached by the U.S. House of Representatives on December 19th, 1998 because Members believed - wrongfully, of course - that Mr. Clinton was guilty of lying under oath and that he was guilty of "obstruction of justice."  The U.S. Senate did not agree - rightfully, of course - with either the perjury or the obstruction of justice charges and, therefore, Mr. Clinton was not convicted.  America's 42nd President was found to be not guilty of any such crimes on February 12th, 1999 and, therefore, President Clinton was not removed from office.  The New York Times published the following in a February 13th, 1999 article. "The Senate today acquitted President Clinton on two articles of impeachment, falling short of even a majority vote on either of the charges against him: perjury and obstruction of justice."  And although he was never impeached because he resigned beforehand, impeachment proceedings had begun against President Richard Nixon in 1974 because he tried to put a stop to the Watergate investigation and, therefore, was accused of "obstruction of justice" by Congress.

Obstruction of justice is just one of the possible crimes that Donald Trump could be charged with when Congress eventually debates the issue of impeachment.  And for those of you who still question what Trump has allegedly done to obstruct justice, let me remind you.  First of all, he put the screws to James Comey when - according to Comey's testimony before Congress on June 7th, 2017 - Trump pressured the then FBI Director to drop the investigation of former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn and any involvement the retired U.S. Army Lieutenant General might have had in connection with Russia's meddling in to the 2016 presidential election.  That's obstruction of justice.  Secondly, Trump fired Comey on May 9th, 2017, which confirms even more that the current Oval Office occupant obstructed justice. However, Trump denies that he attempted to twist Comey's arm to end the Russia probe.  Thirdly - and most recently - Trump seemed to have incriminated himself when he tweeted the following on Saturday, December 2nd, 2017.  "I had to fire General Flynn because he lied to the Vice President and the FBI.  He has pled guilty to those lies. It is a shame because his actions during the transition were lawful. There was nothing to hide!"  So Donald Trump has clearly admitted - in a tweet - that he gave Flynn his pink slip...because he provided false statements to the Federal Bureau of Investigation.  That again is obstruction of justice.  But Trump's personal attorney, John Dowd - later on December 2nd - claimed it was he who wrote the tweet about firing Flynn, not Trump.  If anyone really believes that...then you also believe that pigs can fly.  After all...Trump has a history of spelling and grammatical mistakes when tweeting. Most anyone who has ever watched an episode of Perry Mason on television - or quite frankly is an individual who scored excellent marks in a high school English class - knows that a person confessing to a crime has not "pled" guilty, but has "pleaded" guilty.  As a lawyer...John Dowd would certainly not make such an error.

All of the above being said...Dowd insists that an American president cannot obstruct justice.  Expressing his thoughts first to Mike Allen of Axios on Monday, December 4th, 2017, Dowd noted..."The President cannot obstruct justice because he is the chief law enforcement officer under the Constitution's Article II and has every right to express his view of any case."  Well guess what, Donald...you and your lawyer are living in "Fantasyland" if you and he truly believe...that because you're President...you cannot be prosecuted for obstruction of justice.  Face it.  You can be.  But lawyers for Trump will make every effort to dispute the matter...perhaps all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court, if necessary.  However, based on the fact that President Clinton and President Nixon both faced obstruction of justice charges...Trump doesn't have a prayer in winning the fight.

For now, Trump and his attorneys are merely attempting to "snow job" the American people (or at least anyone who still thinks Trump is sane and fit to be President, which the majority of people throughout the United States don't believe).

As for the possibility of Trump being impeached, I have written in columns - since his inauguration - that Donald Trump will never let himself undergo House impeachment proceedings, let alone a Senate trial.  He will follow the Nixon playbook and resign long before such Congressional action is ever taken.

My commentaries in The Controversy are documentation that I have been writing for two years or more that Donald Trump is a madman who is mentally ill and unfit to serve as our nation's President and Commander-in-Chief.   On November 29th, 2017, the New York Daily News jumped on the bandwagon when the newspaper published... "After his latest spasm of deranged tweets, only those completely under his spell can deny what growing numbers of Americans have long suspected: The President of the United States is profoundly unstable.  He is mad.  He is, by any honest layman’s definition, mentally unwell and viciously lashing out."  Too bad the Daily News and other major news organizations didn't come forward with such thoughts - as I did - prior to the 2016 election.  If they had, Hillary Clinton would probably be our President.

And how would America be different if Mrs. Clinton was President today?  I could certainly list dozens of reasons why the former Secretary of State would be a better President than Donald Trump...not to mention that our 45th President would not be a bigoted narcissist who supports the Ku Klux Klan...who admitted on the Access Hollywood video to sexually assaulting women...and whose insulting behavior has offended everyone from a Gold Star family to a Vietnam War hero turned U.S. Senator.  With Hillary Clinton in The White House...Americans wouldn't be fearing the possibility of a nuclear war with North Korea.  We wouldn't be concerned about a Congressional tax reform bill that will only benefit the wealthy and hurt everybody else.  We wouldn't we worried that a U.S. Supreme Court Justice could suddenly die and cause Trump and the Republican-controlled Senate to replace that jurist with a conservative who could likely be the deciding vote that would overturn Roe vs. Wade and take our country back to when women got abortions by butchers.  And we wouldn't be threatened - yes, even still - by Republicans who remain firm on repealing and replacing the Affordable Care Act...an effort that could bring death to 30-million Americans.  Yes, if not for 77,744 total popular votes - from Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin - Hillary Clinton would have won the electoral votes in those three states and she would be our President.  And the United States of America would be respected by the world...not despised by many of our allies.

So Special Counsel Robert Mueller needs to move quickly.  He needs to prove - beyond the shadow of a doubt - that Donald Trump obstructed justice and/or committed some other crime.  Because despite what Trump and his lawyers may think...nobody is above the law.  Not even the President.

And that's The Controversy for today.

TRUMP'S PRESIDENCY IS NEARING AN END

After reading this editorial, please express your own thoughts.  At the bottom, please click on the word "Comments" below the copyright and type your remarks in the box.  When finished,  please click on the word "Publish."  Please also share a link to this column with others in your e-mail directory and on social media.

I wrote the commentary below as a short posting for Facebook on Friday, December 1st, 2017 after former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn pleaded guilty in federal court that he lied to the FBI about his communications with Russian officials.  The retired United States Army Lieutenant General is now a convicted felon...and he says he will fully cooperate with Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation in to Russia's meddling of the 2016 presidential election. Flynn is the first senior member of Donald Trump's White House to be charged in this probe.  I, therefore, want to share my comments from Facebook so that readers of The Controversy can also focus on my thoughts, as well as those - both positive and negative - from some of my Facebook readers.  Since their names were posted on Facebook, they will be identified in the same manner here.
The end to Donald Trump's presidency is coming. And it's coming sooner rather than later.
If you are a regular reader of The Controversy, you are then aware that I wrote - as early as February 15th, 2017 - that Michael Flynn will be the key to Trump's demise. In that February 15th, 2017 column titled - Is Trump Today's Nixon? Let's Hope Not. - I wrote..."There is a dark cloud hovering over Donald Trump...that is causing The White House to be blackened in controversy and scandal. With Democrats in both the U.S. Senate and the House of Representatives calling for a probe in to ties between General Flynn and Russia...and possible ties between Trump and Putin...are Trump and some Republicans on Capitol Hill worried that if Flynn is subpoenaed to testify under oath before Congress...what beans will be spilled? Has Flynn's friendship with Trump been disintegrated...and, if so...will Flynn throw Trump under the bus? And should he do so...will we learn through irrefutable evidence...through positive proof...that Trump is an illegitimate President who must be evicted from The White House?"
On April 1st, 2017 - in my column titled, Trump May Topple Like A House Of Cards - I wrote..." Retired United States Army Lieutenant General Michael Flynn knows where all the bodies are buried...(figuratively speaking... metaphorically speaking). White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer - on Friday, March 31st, 2017 - claimed that Donald Trump is "not concerned" that Flynn may have damaging testimony against Trump. But if you believe Trump is not scared out of his begeebies...then you also have to believe that pigs can fly." I went on to write..."The amount of 'sketchy stuff' that is going on with Donald Trump is bordering beyond suspicious. And Michael Flynn has nothing to lose by painting a target on the forehead of his old boss. Flynn is willing to trade Trump's life to save his own skin."
The bottom line here...Donald Trump should be preparing his resignation speech. Because that day is coming. And it's what I suggested in my column, titled - Donald Trump Needs To Resign - on March 4th, 2017, a mere 6 weeks in to his presidency. But now...the end is near...and although he would never admit it...I think Donald Trump himself...knows it.
And that's The Controversy for today.

Debbie Shockley George It is great that his demise could come but then what? His cronies are in place starting with Pence. I fear this was the plan all along.

Wayne Duglin We all know he lied; he was fired by the President for lying to the Vice-President. We all know he lied to the FBI. If the President wasn’t involved with any “collusion”, which as of now there has been NO EVIDENCE shown that he was, why should he be concerned? You used the term “will we learn through irrefutable evidence...through positive proof...that Trump is an illegitimate President”. What proof does anyone have that General Flynn’s actions changed a single vote, President Trump won the White House under the laws setup in our Constitution (which I have said many time the left is not fond of), he beat the corrupt Clinton machine (truly the one who should be indicted). Show me some proof that the President was involved with anything illegal that reaches the standard of “Treason, Bribery, or other High Crimes and Misdemeanors” setup in the Constitution and I would agree he should resign, until then let him do his job, fix healthcare, reform our tax code, fix the illegal immigration problem (build that wall), stop ISIS, the list goes on and on. Sit down with him and work together, not like this week with Schumer and Pelosi acting like 4 year olds, get over 2016 and for once do what’s right for the Country!

Gary B. Duglin Jim, do you and Wayne really believe your words? Because if you truly do - and I mean this with all sincerity - then you're both going to be in total shock when you see Donald Trump board Air Force One for the last time. The day is coming when Trump will be moving back in to Trump Tower; never to see the inside of The White House again. That is...if President Mike Pence pardons him. If not...Trump's new home will be one where we'll find him behind bars.

Gary B. Duglin One more point regarding my comment above regarding Mike Pence. That would be applicable only if Pence himself was not involved with Trump and any illegal activity. If Bob Mueller finds that Pence too was in cahoots with Trump then both Trump and Pence will be shown the door and we'd be looking at President Paul Ryan. That too could happen.

Gary B. Duglin It is so obvious that Trumpers are in denial. Anyone who thinks Bob Mueller doesn't have "proof" then you're going to be in shock when all is revealed.

Debbie Shockley George Very scarey to think their could be a President Pence or President Ryan. It's all been the plot all along, the Republicans can't stand Trump. As far as letting Trump do his job, he can't, he has not a clue how to make those things come to fruition.

Gary B. Duglin We have two Debbie's in this conversation. I'm wondering if that is confusing. From now on I will address Debbie Shockley George as Debbie and Deborah Harvey as Deborah. Therefore, in addition, to further reply to Deborah's comment above, my brother Wayne is the conservative Republican in the family while I am the ultra-liberal progressive Democrat. I hope that clears up any confusions.
